Oklahoma's John Mateer breaks record with a significant win against Illinois State, securing the No. 18 spot for the team.
In the highly anticipated season opener for the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners, the offensive rebuild, led by quarterback John Mateer and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, shone brightly. The Sooners outgained Illinois State 495-151 in total offense, demonstrating a strong and cohesive performance.
The game began with a promising first drive, lasting over five minutes, which culminated in a 7-yard touchdown run by Mateer, giving the Sooners a lead late in the first quarter. Mateer and his favourite target, Deion Burks, connected on the first play of the drive with a 28-yard pass.
The Sooners continued to dominate, with Mateer and Burks connecting again for a 27-yard touchdown on the second drive, increasing the Sooners' lead to 14-0. Freshman Tory Blaylock added to the score in the second quarter with an 81-yard drive that ended in a 5-yard touchdown run, putting the Sooners up 21-0 before halftime.
Illinois State managed to score in the third quarter via a 33-yard field goal by Matt Maldonado, following Shadwel Nkuba II's interception of a Mateer pass. However, the Redbirds' offense struggled, finishing the game with just 34 passing yards.
Keontez Lewis, making his OU debut, led the Sooners in receiving, finishing with nine catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Mateer completed an impressive 30 out of 37 passes in the game, surpassing Baker Mayfield's record of 388 passing yards set in the 2015 season opener.
The Sooners' defense held Illinois State to only 151 yards of total offense in the first half, a testament to the hard work and preparation put in during the offseason. Wenkers Wright, leading Illinois State in rushing, managed only 50 yards on seven carries.
Illinois State quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse left the game early in the third quarter after a hard hit from defensive end Taylor Wein. The offensive rebuild at Oklahoma, which received much attention during the offseason, seemed to be well underway in this impressive victory.
