Updates from the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA): A Raucous Ride Through the 2024 Online Gambling Scene

Let's dive into the chaos of the European online gambling world in 2024, as revealed by the EGBA's 2025 Annual Activity Report.

First off, the EGBA welcomed new members to its ranks—the Superbet Group, LeoVegas Group, and Sumsub. With these additions, EGBA now boasts a whopping 321 licenses across 21 European countries, covering some serious real estate in Europe's online gambling landscape. These powerhouses raked in a noteworthy €13.5 billion in online gross gaming revenue (GGR), marking a concrete 15% increase from the previous year. That's on par with roughly a quarter (28%) of Europe's overall online GGR for the year, which stood at a jaw-dropping €47.9 billion.

The action didn't stop there, as the number of stakes processed surged to an astounding 177.7 billion, representing a 31% annual leap. The total value of these stakes reached €215.6 billion, albeit with a slight 14% drop in the average stake value to a still substantial €1.20. Adding to the excitement, customer winnings jumped 11%, hitting €202.1 billion.

When it comes to the revenue kingpins, casino games grabbed the crown with a commanding 51% share (€7 billion), followed by sports betting with 41% (€5.5 billion). Other gambling segments, such as poker, bingo, and other games, and esports/virtual betting, trailed behind. The merry-go-round of gambling revenue saw casino games galloping ahead with a 22% surge, sports betting following shoulder to shoulder with a 15% boost, and bingo and other games trotting up an equally impressive 19%. Esports revenue held its own with a 16% climb, while poker took a breather with a 5% dip. Impressively, within the sports betting realm, pre-match bets accounted for 63% of revenue, while live (in-play) betting contributed 37%.

In terms of safer gambling initiatives, the 4th annual European Safer Gambling Week expanded to a whopping 26 countries, reaching an audience of 3 million citizens. EGBA's emphasis on responsible gaming was evident in its annual sustainability report, which revealed record engagement with safety tools. An amazing 21 million customers (65% of the clientele) used safety measures, and over 67 million messages promoting responsible gambling practices were sent to players.

Regulation-wise, the EGBA set its sights on harmonizing consumer protection standards, particularly confronting the challenges posed by Norway's monopoly-based regulatory system. The report also touched on the implications of the CJEU ruling, emphasizing the importance of the EU’s notification procedure for national gambling regulations, reinforcing cross-border regulatory coherence.
