Ontario imposes fine on BetMGM due to unrestricted promotional practices

Busting the Rules: BetMGM Faces Heat for Unlawful Marketing Practices

The tight-knit community guarding gambling standards in Ontario, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), has slammed BetMGM for breaking Ontario's gambling regulations, using third-party companies to offer luring cash incentives to the public for account creations.

BetMGM's unruly behavior came to the AGCO's attention during two embarrassing episodes in 2024. The first incident, occurring on 13 and 14 January at the National Franchise Show, saw BetMGM reps doling out C$100 in cold hard cash to anyone who registered an account and made a C$15 deposit. In March, BetMGM fessed up to their affiliate "Above the Street" engaging in prohibited inducement marketing, leading to 377 new player sign-ups and a cool C$127,180 in commissions. The second offence followed suit in April, with another affiliate, "Maple Leaf Marketing," resorting to similar fatally flawed tactics, resulting in 94 player sign-ups and around C$34,000 in commissions.

Dr. Karin Schnarr, AGCO's CEO, didn't sugarcoat her disapproval:

"Setting high standards for responsible gambling and shielding Ontarians on registered gaming sites is at the forefront of our priorities."

"The AGCO scrutinizes all registered operators and third-party partners to guarantee they meet our stringent standards, and we won't hesitate to take tough action to make sure they adhere to public interests."

The AGCO's strict punishment came in the form of an Order of Monetary Penalty, citing three explicit violations. Along with these incidents, Ontario's gambling marketing regulations, managed by the AGCO, focus on responsible advertising, consumer protections, and unwavering operator compliance.

Key aspects involve licensing requirements, advertising standards, and data security, with strict penalties reserved for violators, especially unlicensed offshore sites continuing to operate. Though Ontario's regulated market flourishes with 49 operators overseeing 84 legal gambling sites, AGCO continues to address the challenges posed by unregulated platforms employing borderline marketing tactics.

For those yearning for more in-depth knowledge of Ontario's gambling regulations, this year's Canadian Gaming Summit holds discussions on modernizing AML protocols and striking a balance between innovation and player protections. Catch it on June 18th!
