In the world of game development, a shift towards openness is gaining momentum, and it's being spearheaded by companies like Sprocket Games and Unleashed Games. At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, Mythica, the largest procedural platform, announced that these studios will open source key aspects of their projects through its platform.

Josiah Kiehl, CEO of Sprocket Games, affirmed that his studio, formed by ex-Riot Games developers, has made a commitment to open source procedural generation technology. Sprocket Games is built on open source tools, including Linux infrastructure and Mythica's content generation tools. Kiehl expressed concern that traditional studios have been slow to embrace openness, which he believes is holding the industry back. He hopes that the industry will embrace open source initiatives, leading to a faster future.

The addition of assets from Sprocket Games and Unleashed Games represents one of the largest collective open-source contributions in modern game development. Unleashed Games, under the leadership of CEO Irena Pereira, plans to invite players to shape the universe of its game, Haven, through community contributions. Pereira believes open source is the future of games and community engagement.

Mythica's goal is to make open source the standard for the future of the game development industry. The platform, which boasts over 3,000 open-source generative AI tools that integrate into game engine workflows, aims to establish a broader ecosystem of procedural, generative, and modular development tools. Mythica's CEO, Slater Victoroff, stated that the initiative isn't just about sharing code, but unlocking creativity for the next generation of developers.

The move towards greater transparency, accessibility, and collaboration in the industry is seen as a desirable step change by Mythica. This open source revolution could help smaller teams by giving them access to proven tools, as demonstrated by Electronic Arts (EA) making four Command and Conquer titles open source. Mythica is working with organizations like the Linux Foundation to establish pathways for game developers to release their work in compliance with licensing restrictions.

As the game development industry continues to evolve, the embrace of open source initiatives could pave the way for a more collaborative, innovative, and inclusive future. With studios like Sprocket Games and Unleashed Games leading the charge, it seems that the future of game development is indeed open source.
