Opening Performance of Vienna State Opera Features Rehearsal-Free, Star-Studded Gala Event
The Vienna State Opera celebrated its 70th anniversary with a spectacular gala concert on Sunday evening, held in the beautiful Vienna Burggarten. The event, which was broadcast live time-delayed by ORF III, was a free, open-air concert that attracted a diverse crowd, including Thanthida Helbardt, an embassy employee from Thailand.
The concert featured world-renowned performers such as Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca, German tenor Jonas Kaufmann, Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund, and French tenor Benjamin Bernheim. The orchestra was conducted by Bertrand de Billy.
Elina Garanca expressed her happiness about being a part of the event, stating that it allows for communication with people regardless of race, nationality, political situation, and cultural differences. She also hoped that the gala concert would become a "yearly tradition."
Many visitors to the concert sat on picnic blankets or chairs, enjoying the beautiful music under the stars. Canadian ice hockey player Jeremy Gregoire, who recently moved to Vienna, expressed his eagerness to learn about the concert's performers, mentioning a past interest in classical music.
The concert program included audience favorites from operas such as Puccini's "Tosca", Wagner and Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro", and Strauss pieces. In recent years, opera houses globally have been attempting to attract new opera-goers by implementing different measures.
Unfortunately, the park was closed to additional visitors before the concert due to security reasons, turning away some concert-goers. However, those who managed to attend were treated to an unforgettable evening of music and camaraderie.
The Austrian broadcaster ORF aired the concert with a one-hour delay on Sunday evening, and the concert was also broadcast by the media outlet AFP. The Vienna State Opera's 70th anniversary gala concert was indeed a memorable event, marking a significant milestone in the history of the prestigious opera house.
