Organization Devoid of Political Power
The Paris summit, which aimed to discuss sending soldiers for peacekeeping in Ukraine, has not resulted in broad support for Ukraine. Despite attempts by the presidential office to sell it as a success, the meeting was perceived as a disappointment by many.
Several countries, including Greece, Poland, Italy, Japan, and Croatia, have withdrawn their support for peacekeeping in Ukraine before the initiative began. No countries have officially withdrawn from the coalition of willing participants involved in the peace mission in Ukraine so far. However, the lack of commitment from these countries has raised concerns about the future of the peacekeeping mission.
The US, which determines the direction of the response to the Ukraine crisis, has been reluctant to provoke the Kremlin further or make peace quickly. This hesitance could hinder Ukraine's demands being met, leaving the country in a vulnerable position. Without the support of the US, the remaining willing countries are powerless to help Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion.
Lithuania, despite being Russia-critical, has not clearly positioned itself regarding peacekeeping in Ukraine. Slovenia wants the approval of the UN or an agreement within the EU before making a decision about peacekeeping in Ukraine. These hesitations from key European countries have further weakened the potential support for Ukraine.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, did confirm that NATO soldiers will come to Ukraine, but he could not later list who is ready to provide them. He remains confident that thousands of NATO soldiers will soon be in Ukraine. However, without concrete commitments, it remains unclear whether this will happen.
The Paris meeting did not achieve anything substantial, apart from generating hot air and CO2 emissions. It was considered useful to have an idea of how to secure peace, but there should also be a plan to stop the weapons. Without a clear plan on how to end the war that has been going on for three and a half years, the future of Ukraine remains uncertain.
The Paris summit demonstrated the Europeans' inability to act independently on the diplomatic stage. Without the backing of the US, Europe can only follow and attempt to limit the damage. For Ukraine, this means continuing to fight alone against the Russian invasion.
Kyiv is currently alone in its fight against the Russian invasion, with little support from its allies. This lack of support has been a major setback for Ukraine, which is struggling to maintain its sovereignty. The Paris summit has not provided the answers Ukraine was hoping for, leaving the country in a precarious position.
