New Exhibition at Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center Unveils Unseen Aspect of the Author's Career

Get ready for an intriguing exploration into the life and work of Erich Maria Remarque, the renowned German author best known for his anti-war novel, All Quiet on the Western Front. From August 29 to August 31, 2023, the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center in Osnabrück, Germany, will host a unique exhibition that sheds light on a largely unknown chapter in Remarque's career – his time as an advertising copywriter.

The exhibit, which is free for the public to attend, offers a vivid documentation of Remarque's collaboration with Wilhelm Lichtenfeld during his time at Echo Continental, the magazine of the Continental Rubber Works. Erich Maria Remarque worked as an editor at this publication from 1921 to 1924 in Hannover.

The collection, acquired with the support of the Sparkasse Osnabrück Foundation, includes original documents from the estate of Wilhelm Lichtenfeld. Some of the drafts in the collection were created by Remarque while he was still employed at Continental in Hannover. The materials in the collection were created during Remarque's time at Continental in Hannover and later when he was in Berlin for Sport im Bild.

The exhibition at the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center focuses on a previously unknown aspect of the author's work – his time as an advertising copywriter. The materials in the collection provide insights into Remarque's early career as an advertising copywriter, offering a new perspective on his work with language in the context of advertising and industrial communication.

The collection includes drafts for Conti balloon tires, small pamphlets for "Sunday outing," and photographs with advertising slogans for Continental products. These materials offer a fascinating glimpse into Remarque's creative process and his ability to craft compelling narratives, even in the realm of advertising.

Dr. Sven Jürgensen, director of the Remarque Peace Center, stated that the collection offers insights into Remarque's early career as an advertising copywriter. He emphasised that the exhibition will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to delve into this lesser-known aspect of Remarque's career and gain a deeper understanding of his multifaceted talents.

The 38th Lower Saxony Day will host the presentation of the collection at the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center in Osnabrück. This event promises to be an enlightening experience for both Remarque enthusiasts and those new to his work, offering a fresh perspective on one of Germany's most celebrated authors. So, mark your calendars and join us for this exciting journey into the past, as we uncover the hidden gems of Erich Maria Remarque's career.
