Last week, the Public Security Police (PSP) reported a significant increase in various types of crimes across the nation.

The PSP registered 297 cases of domestic violence, a concerning figure that underscores the need for continued efforts to combat this issue. In a particularly distressing incident, a case of domestic violence occurred in Machico, Madeira Island. The assaults in this case were captured on surveillance cameras in the presence of the victim's son, aged 9.

The perpetrator, a 35-year-old individual, has not had their name disclosed publicly. However, they were presented to the first judicial interrogation, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the protection and support of the victim and their family.

The images of the assaults from the Machico case were widely disseminated on social media, garnering widespread attention. The case has been a topic of concern for many, including Paula Margarido, the regional secretary for Inclusion, Youth, and Labor, who expressed being deeply shocked by the incident.

In addition to the rise in domestic violence cases, the PSP made 49 arrests for drug trafficking last week, seizing 5,150 individual doses of drugs. They also made 251 arrests for road crimes and 42 arrests for property crimes (thefts, robberies, and frauds).

The PSP also reported 11 arrests for illegal immigration last week. In one such case, the suspect was remanded in preventive custody.

These figures underscore the ongoing efforts of the PSP to maintain law and order in the country, and the importance of continued vigilance and support for those affected by crime.
