Over 27,615 incidents, presumably road accidents, occurred in the urban setting of Düsseldorf, during the previous year.

In a recent announcement, Jasmin Wierczioch, head of the Traffic Directorate of the Düsseldorf Police, revealed plans for more civilian traffic controls in the city. The move comes in response to a rise in traffic incidents and accidents reported in 2024.

According to the data presented by Police Director Reiner Schiffer, the number of traffic incidents in Düsseldorf totalled 27,615, a 1.8% increase from the previous year. On the city's motorways, there were 15,531 traffic incidents, marking a 2.5% increase.

One concerning trend that emerged in 2024 was an increase in incidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The number of incidents involving drunk drivers rose by 28% to 1,180, while the number of incidents involving drivers under the influence of drugs rose by 35.1% to 1,058.

Sadly, the increase in traffic incidents resulted in more fatalities. In 2024, 17 people died on Düsseldorf's motorways due to traffic accidents, compared to 24 in 2023.

Significant accidents also occurred in the area of congestion due to construction on Düsseldorf's motorways. Approximately 500 serious accidents occurred in these areas in 2024, but no information about the number of deaths or injuries was provided.

Excessive speed is a factor in accidents in construction areas on Düsseldorf's motorways and in the city as a whole. Despite a 30.1% decrease in excessive speed incidents in 2024, it remains the main cause of accidents in the city.

The Düsseldorf Police's Traffic Tuning Task Force took action against dangerous drivers, impounding 38 vehicles out of the 568 they checked in 2024.

The main accident hotspots in Düsseldorf for 2024 are at Morsbroicher Ei, Nordstern, and Worringer Platz. The traffic intersection around Ernst-Reuter-Platz moved from 12th place to 7th place in the top 10 accident hotspots, while Volklinger/Fährstraße moved from 33rd place to 8th place.

On Düsseldorf's streets, 2,765 people were involved in traffic accidents, and 9 people died. It's worth noting that 90.8% of traffic incidents in the city resulted in property damage, compared to 74% on motorways.

In an effort to further improve road safety, the Düsseldorf Police will be implementing more civilian traffic controls. However, as of now, no information about the name of the police inspector announcing these additional citizen patrols is available.

In addition, 26 traffic incidents involving children occurred on school routes in Düsseldorf in 2024. It's crucial that all drivers remain vigilant and follow traffic rules to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads.
