Over 3 million attic fans are being recalled due to potential fire hazard concerns
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of nearly 3 million ceiling fans, manufactured by Air Vent, Inc. The recall is due to the potential risk of the fans' electric motors short circuiting and starting a fire.
The affected fans were sold in various stores and wholesalers, as well as online, across the country, between August 2003 and December 2013. They were sold for approximately $74 and $92. The recall involves gable and roof-mounted attic fans with electric motors, whose safety cutoffs may pose a fire hazard.
Only the attic fan motors with the distinctive vent pattern are being recalled. The distinctive vent pattern on the motor end bells is used to identify the recalled attic fan motors. The models included in the recall are: DOW-136-0-34-XIN, DOW-136-0-26-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN-3⁄4, and D-RE-PSC-127/20-4P1SP.
A total of 159 reported incidents involving burning or a fire have been reported regarding the recalled attic fan motors. However, no injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled attic fan motors.
If purchased, consumers should stop using the recalled fans and contact Air Vent for a refund. Consumers will need to fill out an online registration and verification form with photos of the recalled attic fan motor for a refund. The CPSC did not provide information on how consumers can return or replace the recalled fans.
The affected roof and chimney caps from Air Vent, Inc. were also sold at Menards, Home Depot, and various local hardware stores. The recall was not mentioned to be limited to any specific geographical location.
The CPSC encourages consumers to take this recall seriously and to act promptly to prevent any potential fires. For more information, consumers can visit the CPSC's website or contact Air Vent directly.
