Over 325 thousand individuals to undergo mandatory evacuation in Vietnam
Typhoon Kajiki Hits Vietnam, Causing Significant Damage and Disruption
Typhoon Kajiki, a powerful storm with winds up to 160 km/h, has made its way to Vietnam, causing substantial economic losses and disruption. According to estimates, the typhoon has resulted in over $21 million in economic losses.
The city center of Vinh, a coastal city in the center of Vietnam, was flooded overnight, leaving the streets largely deserted and most shops and restaurants closed in the morning. The evacuation of nearly 30,000 people from the region is underway, with 325,500 people from five coastal provinces set to be evacuated to temporary shelters in schools and public buildings.
In preparation for Typhoon Kajiki making landfall in the central region of the country, many shops and restaurants in Vinh have their entrances protected with sandbags. Two national airports in Vietnam have been closed, and more than a dozen domestic flights were canceled on Sunday.
The storm is expected to significantly lose intensity after making landfall. However, the memory of Typhoon Yagi, which swept through the north of Vietnam last September, causing hundreds of deaths and a loss of $3.3 billion, is still fresh in the minds of many.
The island of Hainan, China, also evacuated 20,000 residents as the typhoon passed over the south coast. The Ministry of Agriculture in Vietnam reports that more than 100 people have been killed or reported missing due to natural disasters in Vietnam in the first seven months of 2025.
Typhoon Kajiki is the fifth typhoon to hit Vietnam this year. All fishing boats in the typhoon's path have been recalled to port. The storm is currently churning the Gulf of Tonkin with waves reaching up to 9.5 meters.
Despite efforts to find the name of the governor or leader of the provinces most affected by Typhoon Kajiki, the search results do not provide any information. The evacuation and preparations for the typhoon's arrival are ongoing, and the hope is that the damage and loss of life will be minimized.
