Flood Prevention Efforts in Zhambyl Region Progressing, but Risks Remain

Over the past five years, the Zhambyl region has faced the brunt of seven floods, affecting over 100 residential buildings and putting more than 70 settlements at risk. According to the regional Emergency Situations Department, over 230,000 residents live in these dangerous areas.

In 2017, a Roadmap for preventing floods in the Zhambyl region was drawn up for the period of 2017-2020. The Roadmap identified 26 sections for preventive measures and repairs, and almost 8 billion tenge has been allocated for these efforts. As of now, work has been completed on 25 of the 26 sections identified in the Roadmap, with the remaining sections set to be finished in a few days.

The Roadmap, however, does not specify a new allocation of funds for additional repairs on objects to prevent dam breaches. Authorities have already begun repairs on 33 objects to prevent dam breaches, but more may be needed in case of a sudden thaw. In such a scenario, the water level in 14 local reservoirs could rise due to snowmelt, posing a significant risk of flooding.

The head of the regional Emergency Situations Department, Ermek Mombayev, gave a pessimistic forecast, stating that in case of a sudden thaw, the situation could become critical. He emphasised the need for continued vigilance and preparation.

Despite the progress made, the name of the person who created the 'Roadmap' for flood prevention in the Zhambyl region for 2017-2020 remains unknown. However, the efforts made so far have resulted in the complete restoration of 25 flooded residential buildings, offering some hope for the region's residents.

In conclusion, while significant progress has been made in preventing floods in the Zhambyl region, the threat of flooding remains, particularly in the event of a sudden thaw. The authorities continue to work diligently to complete the remaining sections of the Roadmap and prepare for any potential threats.
