Over a tenth of trainees in Thuringia originate from foreign countries - Over a tenth of the apprentices in Thuringia exceed the number.

In the German state of Thuringia, a significant number of apprentices are of foreign origin, with approximately 10% coming from various countries. This diversity is not just a temporary phenomenon, as businesses in the craft and industrial sectors are actively seeking apprentices abroad, particularly in Vietnam.

Last year, over 3,700 foreign apprentices were employed in Thuringian companies, with a large proportion of them being refugees from countries such as Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Ukraine, and others. These apprentices were trained in various sectors, with the majority finding their footing in the healthcare and social sector.

One-third of foreign apprentices were trained in the hospitality industry, while manufacturing also has a high proportion of foreign apprentices. The South Thuringian economy, in particular, is heavily engaged in Vietnam for apprenticeship recruitment.

The country where Thuringian crafts and industrial companies are particularly active in seeking apprentices is Uzbekistan. This is evident in the EU-funded project "Usbekische Azubi für Thüringen" (Uzbek Apprentice for Thuringia), which aims to enable 30 young people from Uzbekistan to start vocational training in Thuringia by 2025. Five contracts have already been signed, with the project partners being the Ostthüringer Ausbildungsverbund and local companies.

Nursing homes and hospitals in Thuringia have been searching abroad for vocational trainees for years. The long-term goal is to provide these foreign apprentices with employment opportunities in Thuringia once they complete their training. This initiative not only benefits the businesses in need of skilled workers but also provides opportunities for young people from various countries to gain valuable work experience and integrate into German society.
