Over a Third of Australian Ransomware Targets Suffer Repeated Attacks

In a comprehensive study conducted by Vanson Bourne in April and May 2025, it has been revealed that Australian businesses are facing a growing threat from ransomware attacks. The survey, which involved 2,000 senior security decision-makers in various roles and industries worldwide, highlighted the need for integrated protection that not only blocks threats but also enables rapid detection, swift response, and effective recovery.

The organisations surveyed ranged in size, with between 50 and 2,000 employees, and were based in countries including the U.S., UK, France, DACH, Benelux, the Nordics, Australia, India, and Japan. The independent market research company that conducted the study was Cybersecurity Insiders.

Dan McLean, Country Manager ANZ at Barracuda, stated that ransomware is an escalating threat and fragmented security defenses leave organisations vulnerable. He suggested that to fight modern ransomware threats, simplification, integration, and smarter automation are needed, not just more tools.

Beyond data loss, ransomware is causing serious business disruption, including lost customers and reputational harm. The goal of the study was to minimise risk exposure and reduce the blast radius of any breach across the digital ecosystem.

McLean emphasised the importance of addressing the ransomware threat, stating that it is not just about recovering from an attack, but also about preventing it in the first place. He urged businesses to take a proactive approach to cybersecurity, rather than relying on reactive measures.

The full report, which provides a detailed analysis of the ransomware burden in Australia, can be found here. It is essential reading for any business looking to protect itself from the growing threat of ransomware attacks.
