Over the course of a week, BC Highway Patrol confiscated over 60 vehicles during their Sea to Sky policing operation.

Over the last week of August, the British Columbia Highway Patrol took action against dangerous driving on the Sea to Sky Highway. More than 60 vehicles were impounded for speeding and impairment during this period.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the BC Highway Patrol, is urging drivers to slow down and allow more time for their journeys. With the return of school and the changing weather and darkness, he emphasizes the importance of safe driving.

One such incident involved a 29-year-old man from Vancouver, who was clocked traveling at 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Porteau Cove on Aug. 27. His blue pickup truck was impounded for seven days at his expense. This infraction resulted in significant costs for the driver, estimated to be almost $2,500.

In addition to the excessive speeding fine, the 29-year-old man will likely face at least three years of high-risk driving premiums on his insurance.

Another incident involved a 61-year-old man from North Vancouver, who was stopped for excessive speeding on a Harley Davidson in Lions Bay. His motorcycle was impounded for 30 days, and he was fined $368 for excessive speeding and an additional $109 for unnecessary noise due to his bike's after-market muffler. The total costs for the 61-year-old man due to increased insurance premiums are estimated to be over $2,500.

Cpl. McLaughlin also mentioned that police frequently catch people doing both speeding and being impaired at the same time. He stated that there are still too many people driving unimaginably fast or impaired on the Sea to Sky Highway.

Roughly half of the impoundments occurred over Labour Day weekend. Cpl. McLaughlin encourages drivers to stay sober and drive responsibly to ensure the safety of all road users. He also advises drivers to plan their trips accordingly, allowing for extra time and adhering to the posted speed limits.
