Training Market in Schleswig-Holstein: Late Summer Holidays Delay Entries

The training market in Schleswig-Holstein is experiencing some fluctuations, with entries being made later than usual, particularly due to the late summer holidays. Despite this, numerous companies and training positions are currently offering apprenticeships in the region.

Prominent companies such as Aldi Nord in Bargteheide, Deutsche Post DHL in Neumünster, Deutsche Bahn AG, and local businesses like the family bakery in Kiel, are among those offering training opportunities. In fact, Flensburg alone has over 500 open apprenticeship positions for 2025 and 2026.

As of July 31, the Industry and Commerce Chambers (IHK) districts of Lübeck, Flensburg, and Kiel have signed 6,843 new employment contracts. The Craft Chambers have welcomed 5,350 apprentices so far, with Flensburg reporting several hundred open training positions.

The most popular training occupations in the crafts sector in Schleswig-Holstein include automotive mechatronics, electronics for energy and building technology, sanitary, heating, and air conditioning technology, carpentry, and agricultural and construction machinery mechatronics.

Despite the slight delay in entries, around 80% of the total new contracts expected for the year 2025 have already been completed in the Craft Chambers. This is nearly identical to the number of apprentices welcomed by the Craft Chambers in Lübeck and Flensburg in the previous year.

The IHK districts of Lübeck, Flensburg, and Kiel have seen the most new entries for the occupations of retail salesperson and office management assistant. Closely followed by industrial business management and office management at the IHK.

A spokesperson for the IHK stated that there is a slight recovery in the training market, with companies and training positions becoming more available. They also emphasized that contacting the chambers, companies, and the employment agency is always worthwhile for finding training places in both industry and commerce and in the crafts sector.

When asked about the 'most popular training occupation', the IHK spokesperson responded that it is the occupational profile in which one can develop, contribute one's skills, and be happy.

No specific information about the Kiel district was provided regarding the number of apprentices or training places. However, it is clear that the training market in Schleswig-Holstein continues to offer opportunities for young individuals seeking to start their careers through apprenticeships.
