Over three thousand fresh applicants vying for the police commissioner position
The North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) police force is addressing the increasing demand for personnel with a series of measures aimed at boosting recruitment. The state government has established a task force to increase the number of police cadet applications, and the recruitment efforts have been bolstered with innovative formats.
The Ministry of the Interior in Düsseldorf announced that over 10,500 applications have been received for the upcoming intake, marking the third consecutive year that the police in NRW will train this number of recruits. The state has reached its target for new recruits, as set by the black-green coalition.
Patrick Schlüter, head of the police union in NRW (GdP), stated that the police need reinforcements in all areas. He emphasised the importance of addressing the dropout rates in police training in NRW, which currently exceed 20 percent.
To address the demand, the police have expanded their training capacities and actively recruited former reservists. It is now possible to start a career with the police in NRW with a secondary school leaving certificate. The minimum height requirement for police applicants in NRW has also been lowered.
The police in NRW will train 3,000 new recruits in September, and the state must adapt training conditions to the increased recruitment figures. The Ministry of the Interior states that over 60,000 people work for the police in NRW, including trainees.
Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) stated that many committed individuals are choosing to serve the state and protect society. The success of the recruitment drive is evident in the high number of applications received, indicating a strong interest in joining the NRW police force.
Despite the positive developments, the search results did not provide information about the current leader of the police union in NRW or the announcement of 3,000 women and men beginning police training in September. Nonetheless, the efforts to address the recruitment demand and improve the training conditions bode well for the future of the NRW police force.
