Overnight Russian drone assault disrupts electricity for numerous residents in Odesa, Ukraine claims

Russia launched a series of drone attacks on Sunday, targeting additional power facilities in the Odesa region, specifically affecting DTEK, Ukraine's largest power producer. The attack left more than 29,000 customers without electricity in the early hours of the morning.

The port city of Chornomorsk was also hit hard, with residential houses and administrative buildings sustaining damage. Oleh Kiper, the governor of the broader Odesa region, confirmed the attack on the Telegram messaging app. One person was reportedly injured as a result of the attack.

DTEK, in a statement, reported that four of its power facilities came under attack overnight. The company is now awaiting permission from the military and rescue services to inspect the damaged equipment and carry out emergency repair work. Critical infrastructure in the affected areas is currently operating on generators.

This latest attack on Ukrainian power facilities comes amidst a recent escalation of attacks by Russia on Ukrainian energy and gas infrastructure. In response, Kyiv has struck Russian oil refineries and pipelines.

It's worth noting that Russia has not made any comment regarding the latest attack. Similarly, there was no immediate response from Russia following a sweeping attack on Thursday that targeted many regions of Ukraine, killing 25 people in Kyiv.

The attacks on DTEK's facilities have added to the ongoing power outages in the Odesa region, exacerbating the challenges faced by the community. DTEK plans to inspect the damaged equipment and carry out repairs as soon as they receive permission from the military and rescue services.

The Russian military has been intensifying its attacks on Ukrainian energy and gas infrastructure in recent weeks. This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict and its impact on the daily lives of Ukrainian citizens.
