Tübingen's Controversial Debate Between Mayor and AfD Leader to be Live-Streamed

A highly anticipated public discussion between Tübingen's independent Mayor Boris Palmer and the AfD's state chairman Markus Frohnmaier is set to take place this Friday evening. The event, which has been sold out and will be attended by around 700 people, is causing a stir in the city.

Despite the debate not being broadcast, the city will live stream the event on the internet for those unable to attend. An external service provider has been commissioned to broadcast the event on an independent website, and the link will be available on the municipality's website on the day of the event.

Mayor Palmer, known for his outspokenness and strong opinions, has appeared in numerous talk shows, and Frohnmaier, a Bundestag member since 2017 and the leader of the AfD's Southwest state association, is a close confidant of AfD party leader Alice Weidel.

The debate will be divided into six thematic blocks: freedom of speech, climate protection, internal security and migration, housing and social affairs, economic location of Baden-Württemberg, and democracy and the rule of law. Audience members will have the opportunity to speak during the debate, either through pre-submitted questions or statements, or via microphone, details are still being clarified.

Access controls will be in place, and visitors will have to present a personal ID at the entrance. Police will also be present inside the hall, along with stewards, and the Tübingen police station is positioning officers around the hall to protect the event and separate troublemakers.

The public discussion is taking place due to the cancellation of an AfD demonstration. However, several demonstration calls have been made for the evening. Organizations that announced demonstrations for the evening of the Palmer-Frohnmaier debate include "Omas gegen Rechts" and other critics who oppose the debate and the AfD presence in Tübingen. More than a thousand participants attended a largely peaceful protest criticizing the debate and Palmer's approach.

Frohnmaier sees the conversation as a strong sign of an open debate culture, while Palmer intends to expose the argumentative weaknesses of the AfD during the debate. Joachim Knape, a professor of rhetoric at the University of Tübingen, will moderate the debate.

Frohnmaier's appearance in Tübingen has been met with controversy, with many opposing his views and presence in the city. However, the debate is seen as an important opportunity for open dialogue and the exchange of ideas. The event is sure to be a significant moment in the ongoing political discourse in Tübingen.
