In a highly-anticipated debate, Tübingen's independent Mayor, Boris Palmer, and Markus Frohnmaier, the AfD's South West state association leader, will square off on stage. The event, scheduled to take place in a hall seating around 700 people, is already sold out.

Moderated by Joachim Knape, a rhetoric teacher at the University of Tübingen, the debate will be divided into six topic blocks, with three proposed by Palmer and three by Frohnmaier.

Boris Palmer, who has been Tübingen's mayor since 2007, is known for his outspoken and opinionated nature, earning him recognition as one of the most well-known mayors in the country. Markus Frohnmaier, a Bundestag member since 2017, is considered one of the most influential representatives of the right wing of the AfD and has been involved with the party's youth organization, "Junge Alternative."

Frohnmaier has criticized Palmer for his political history with the Greens, while Palmer intends to expose the argumentative weaknesses of the AfD during the debate.

Visitors will have to show their ID at the entrance, and both the police and stewards will be present to ensure access controls, protect the event, and separate troublemakers. The debate will be broadcast on an independent internet site, with a link available on the municipality's website on the day of the event.

The city also plans to offer a live stream of the debate on the internet. Meanwhile, several demonstrations have been called for the evening, with around 1,500 people registered but more expected. The demonstrators, mainly supporting political positions against right-wing extremism, racism, and anti-democratic tendencies, advocate for democracy, openness, and diversity while opposing the AfD and right-wing populism.

Palmer has appealed to the participants of the demos to stay away from those who do not intend to demonstrate peacefully. In an open letter, he expressed his full support for the demonstrators. Alice Weidel, party leader, and Frohnmaier have a close relationship, with Frohnmaier serving as Weidel's spokesman at one point.

The police will also be present inside the hall during the debate to maintain order and ensure a fair and peaceful exchange of ideas. Frohnmaier looks forward to an open debate culture and has rejected accusations of incompetence.
