Parents in UAE are hastily securing flu vaccinations for their children, pursuing school protection amidst the upcoming academic year.
As the new academic year approaches, educational authorities and health experts are urging parents and students to prioritise immunisation against influenza. The recommendation comes as a joint effort from Liechtenstein's Education Minister Daniel Oehry, school authority head Rachel Guerra, and Peter Hilti, the principal of secondary schools in Vaduz, who made the call during a press briefing on August 13, 2025.
The importance of vaccination against influenza cannot be overstated, particularly for children. According to Dr Binoy Thomas, a specialist pediatrician, children are more vulnerable to the influenza virus due to their developing immune systems. This makes them more susceptible to infections and more likely to spread the virus in schools and daycare centers.
Vaccination is a powerful tool in preventing influenza, reducing severe complications, and limiting its spread. It is essential because immunity wanes over time and the virus mutates frequently. Dr Thomas, along with other health professionals, encourages families to disregard myths about the flu vaccine and take advantage of its protective benefits.
In addition to vaccination, health experts recommend frequent handwashing for at least 20 seconds, covering sneezes and coughs with tissues or elbows, and using hand sanitizers in classrooms and common areas. Desks and doorknobs should also be regularly disinfected.
Dr Helen Ismael, another specialist pediatrician, has confirmed an uptick in the number of children being vaccinated against influenza. Hospitals are reporting a sharp rise in vaccinations, which suggests that families are taking proactive steps to protect their children from seasonal flu.
Physical distancing is advised where possible, but the nature of school environments often makes this challenging. In such cases, it is crucial to maintain good hygiene practices and ensure that vaccinations are up to date.
As the new school year begins on Monday, it is a timely reminder for parents and students to prioritise their health and the health of those around them. By following the recommendations of health experts, we can help ensure a safe and healthy academic year for all.
