Paris 2024: Sustainable Games for a Sustainable Future

The upcoming 33rd Olympiad in Paris is set to make history as the first Olympic Games aligned with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the organization behind the Games, has authored the book "Less, Better and for Longer: Five Ways Paris 2024 Is Delivering More Sustainable Games".

Paris 2024's circular economy strategy is based on three key principles: organizing the Games with fewer resources, making better use of these resources, and ensuring the second life of resources after the Games. This approach is evident in various aspects of the Games, from venue locations to resource management.

Ninety percent of the Games' six million assets will be reclaimed and reused postgame, with the remaining 10% earmarked for a meaningful second life. The majority of the venues are located within ten kilometers of the Olympic Village, reducing transportation emissions and carbon footprint.

The Olympic Village neighborhood, currently with an unemployment rate of more than 20%, will undergo improvements. The improvements include the creation of an aquatics center for local children, a dynamic residential and business district, and upgrades to electricity lines, traffic buffers, Canal Saint-Denis, and the River Seine.

The "Food Vision" program will deliver 13 million meals during the Olympics and Paralympics. This program aims to cut emissions, halve the use of single-use plastics, and emphasize plant-based cuisine, nearby food sourcing, smart quantity estimating, and composting.

Toyota is providing an optimized fleet of electric, hybrid, and hydrogen powered vehicles for the Games. The fleet will consist of some 40% fewer vehicles than in past Games, further reducing the carbon footprint.

Organizers are meticulously inventorying the event's resources and innovations to avoid generating carbon emissions. Renewable energy will be used throughout the event, minimizing the use of generators. Any necessary generators will be powered with biofuel, hydrogen gas, or batteries instead of diesel.

The 33rd Olympiad will have a carbon budget considering its carbon output at every stage, aiming to reduce the Games' carbon footprint by half. Paris 2024 is not just a sporting event; it's a step towards a more sustainable future.
