Partial obscuring of moon due to Earth's shadow anticipated in certain locations

Observing the astronomical marvel, the lunar eclipse, with your kids, is indeed a fortunate event, as it occurs early and doesn't require a telescope for viewing. But, as with many things, it's not without its flaws.

The total lunar eclipse, a natural spectacle in the sky, is set to occur on Sunday, and it's expected to be visible in high numbers across the south and northeast of Germany. However, the visibility might be affected by a low-pressure area and possible fog fields, as previously mentioned.

Observatories in Stuttgart and Bodensee Planetarium in Kreuzlingen near Constance have opened their doors for the event. For those in Berlin, the Archenhold Observatory and Wilhelm Foerster Observatory are offering guided live observations through professional telescopes for interested parties.

Carolin Liefke from the Haus der Astronomie in Heidelberg states that during the total lunar eclipse, the moon will set completely darkened. Interestingly, she adds that it's an event that can be easily observed with children in the south of Germany.

During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth moves between the sun and the moon, causing the moon to appear in reddish-brown tones due to sunlight being deflected through Earth's atmosphere. It might be difficult to see the moon during the total lunar eclipse, especially near the horizon. Observers may have to wait until the moon rises above the haze layers in the sky to see it.

No special equipment is required to observe the total lunar eclipse in the south of Germany, as stated by Liefke. However, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a forecast for the total lunar eclipse, but its uncertain how it will impact the visibility.

In case the moon can only be seen during the total lunar eclipse when it's already out of total darkness, it's a sight not to be missed. So, keep your eyes on the skies this Sunday evening for this unique celestial event.
