In the heart of Palma, on the evening of August 30, 2023, the city was transformed as Elrow XXL, an internationally renowned electronic music festival, took centre stage. The event, which attracted a crowd of 20,000, was spread across four unique stages, each representing a parallel world, and featured a lineup of talented artists.

The festivities were led by Deborah de Luca and Andrés Campo on the Industry City stage, where techno and hard techno ruled the night. Meanwhile, the Pink Cathedral stage was a vibrant dance floor led by local DJs, and the Psychrowdelic Trip stage featured the Martinez Brothers and Joseph Capriati. Elrow XXL reached its peak at midnight, with food trucks and reinforced EMT buses ensuring attendees had a smooth and enjoyable experience.

However, the event has sparked a public and political debate due to its ties with the KKR investment fund. Known for its investments in Israeli companies operating in Palestinian territories, KKR also acquired Superstruct Entertainment in January 2024, the group responsible for hosting up to 85 festivals worldwide.

This connection has led to accusations that the money raised from ticket sales is channelled to KKR or other financial activities, a claim that festival organisers and supporters argue is misleading. They maintain that the money is entirely reinvested in expenses and future editions of the event.

The debate revolves around whether it is possible to conceive of macro-festivals outside of capitalist circles and how this model would affect our country's culture, music industry, and economy. Critics argue that attending Elrow XXL could imply indirect support for military actions in Gaza, while supporters claim that the responsibility should not fall on attendees, artists, or workers, who only seek to participate in culture.

In response to these concerns, the festivals have adopted awareness-raising and dialogue measures, and have offered the option of a ticket refund to those who do not wish to attend for ethical reasons. Some have taken this option, while others have joined demonstrations outside Son Fusteret, voicing their opinions on both sides of the debate.

The Elrow XXL controversy serves as a reminder of the complex dilemmas that can arise when cultural events intersect with political and economic issues. As the debate continues, it is clear that the impact of such events extends far beyond the music and dancing, touching on broader questions about responsibility, ethics, and the role of capitalism in our cultural landscape.
