In a historic summit in Washington on August 8, 2023, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and US President Donald Trump agreed upon a new regional transit and infrastructure plan named the Trump Route, or the International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP).

The Trump Route is part of the Middle Corridor and the North-South Corridor, as stated by Aliyev during his speech at the SCO summit. This plan aims to establish vital links between the countries, facilitating trade and economic growth.

However, a point of contention has arisen regarding the terminology used for this project. Pashinyan criticized Aliyev for using the term 'Zangezur corridor' instead of 'Trump Route', arguing that the latter is the agreed-upon term and is perceived differently by Armenia. The Zangezur corridor, as referred to by Aliyev, is considered by Armenia as implying a territorial claim against its Syunik region and demand for an extraterritorial route.

Pashinyan clarified to the other attendees of the meeting that the TRIPP stems from his government's Crossroads of Peace project, proposed in October 2023. He believes that the use of the clarified, agreed terminology will contribute to a constructive atmosphere and the implementation of further work.

Aliyev, in turn, stated his praise for the potential impact of the TRIPP during his speech at the SCO summit. Despite the agreed-upon term - the Trump Route or TRIPP - Aliyev and Turkish officials tend to use both terms interchangeably.

The agreement on the Trump Route was outlined in a joint declaration between the three leaders. According to the declaration, a US company will manage the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), but the specific company's name is not mentioned in the available information.

The Washington summit also disclosed the US involvement in the unblocking of a route through Armenia connecting Azerbaijan to its exclave of Nakhchivan, named as TRIPP, or the Trump Route. The use of the clarified, agreed terminology, as suggested by Pashinyan, is believed to contribute to a constructive atmosphere and the implementation of further work.

In his speech at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Pashinyan noted that the use of the term 'Zangezur corridor' is not perceived by Armenia in the same logic as agreed upon in Washington. He reiterated his commitment to the TRIPP and the potential it holds for regional cooperation and economic growth.

The Trump Route, or TRIPP, is set to be a significant step forward in regional transit and infrastructure development. As more details emerge, it will be interesting to see how this project unfolds and the impact it will have on the Caucasus region.
