Pavia Leads Vanderbilt to Victory over Charleston Southern in Season's Initial Matchup

In a lopsided contest, the Vanderbilt Commodores cruised to a 45-3 victory over Charleston Southern on a sunny afternoon. The Commodores, led by head coach Clark Lea since 2020, showcased their offensive prowess, scoring on four of their first five drives.

Quarterback Diego Pavia was the driving force behind Vanderbilt's offensive success. In the first half alone, Pavia completed 20 of 25 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 33 rushing yards, leading the team on an 8-play, 75-yard drive on the opening possession that culminated in a touchdown pass to Kayleb Barnett.

Jamezell Lassiter and Makhilyn Young contributed to the scoring for Vanderbilt, with Lassiter scoring on a 35-yard run in the second half, and Young adding a 4-yard touchdown run. Tre Richardson also had a solid outing, catching five passes for 74 yards.

Running back Sedrick Alexander also had a strong performance, rushing for 83 yards during the game. Brock Taylor added a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to extend Vanderbilt's lead.

Charleston Southern's offense struggled to find consistency, with Zolten Osborne completing 8 of 16 passes for 54 yards and an interception. Isaiah Gordon had 28 yards rushing on eight carries for the Buccaneers, but it was not enough to keep pace with Vanderbilt's high-scoring attack.

The Buccaneers avoided the shutout with a 38-yard field goal from Zach Gordon with seven seconds remaining. Despite the late score, it was too little, too late for Charleston Southern as Vanderbilt's dominant performance secured a 45-3 victory.

With the win, the Vanderbilt Commodores improve to a winning season in 2024, continuing their strong play under coach Lea. The team will look to carry this momentum into their next game as they look to build on their impressive start to the season.
