Peace agreement reached on Gaza ceasefire proposal by Hamas
Breaking News: Egypt and Qatar Mediate Ceasefire Proposal in Gaza Conflict
In a significant development, Egypt and Qatar have stepped forward as mediators in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, proposing a ceasefire agreement that could potentially bring an end to over 22 months of violence.
On Sunday, Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty visited the Rafah border crossing with Gaza, stating that Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was in the region to consolidate efforts for the deal.
The proposed ceasefire, which has been received positively by all factions in Gaza, includes a 60-day truce, the release of some hostages, and the entry of much-needed aid. Hamas official Bassem Naim announced that Hamas has agreed to the mediators' new proposal "without requesting any amendments."
The deal also includes the release of some Palestinian prisoners, a move that could significantly improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, where UN agencies and aid groups have warned of famine due to the dire conditions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed that Israel will agree to an agreement in which all hostages are released at once and according to conditions for ending the war. The ceasefire proposal was sent by the mediators Egypt and Qatar, with the support of the US.
However, tensions remain high, with Israeli forces killing at least 20 people across the Gaza Strip on Monday, including six in the south. Out of 251 hostages taken during Hamas' October 2023 attack, 49 are still held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead.
The Egyptian and Qatari proposal comes after a fresh diplomatic push to end the conflict, with Abdelatty stressing the urgency of reaching an agreement due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. More than a week ago, Israel's security Cabinet approved plans to conquer Gaza City and nearby refugee camps, a move that could escalate the conflict further.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community is closely watching the developments in Gaza, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and an improvement in the living conditions of the people of Gaza.
