Peaceful Midwestern community faces discord as rumored tech juggernaut orchestrates potential $1.6B acquisition plan
In the heart of Wisconsin, the city of Menomonie finds itself at the centre of a contentious issue, with a proposed $1.6 billion data center development causing a stir among residents. The development, proposed by Balloonist LLC, would occupy hundreds of acres of farmland that originally belonged to the quaint town of Red Cedar, which neighbours Menomonie.
The identity of Balloonist LLC remains unknown to the public, a fact that has raised concerns among some residents. City Councilwoman Sydney Brennan believes that the community should give the plans a chance, stating that the development could potentially improve Menomonie's credit rating, lowering interest rates and taxes.
However, not everyone shares Brennan's optimism. Dylan Goss, a Menomonie resident, expressed an uneasy feeling about the development. He, along with other residents, has voiced concerns about the project, calling for full public accountability, independent environmental review, and proof that the project will serve the community, not just corporate profit.
A Change.org petition with over 1,000 signatures has been launched to hinder the proposal from moving forward. One group member, Dog Meier, posted that data centers do not belong in rural America. The Facebook group "Stop the Menomonie Data Center" was started to oppose the plans.
The City of Menomonie found a loophole by petitioning for the annexation and rezoning of the land, a move that has been met with criticism. The petition asserts that Menomonie's land, water, and future belong to the people, not to hidden investors or distant shareholders.
The city council's adopted ordinance does not guarantee Balloonist LLC's plans will be executed. A formal proposal for the data center must be submitted and approved by the city council. The data center, if approved, would use approximately 75,000 gallons of water each day, according to the City of Menomonie.
The development could create about 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and 50 to 75 full-time, high-paying jobs once completed. However, the potential benefits are weighed against the concerns about the unknown company behind the plans and the impact on the environment and community.
As the city of Menomonie navigates this significant decision, the debate continues, with residents on both sides of the issue voicing their opinions. The outcome of this proposal could shape the future of Menomonie for years to come.
