Pérez-Reverte criticizes Pablo Motos over a question perceived as biased: "You've placed me in a testicle-filled garden"
Arturo Pérez-Reverte, the renowned Spanish author, has recently released the eighth instalment in the Alatriste series, titled 'Mission in Paris'. The novel, published on September 3, sees the titular character embarking on a perilous, almost suicidal mission in France.
'Alatriste', a series inspired by Alexandre Dumas's 'The Three Musketeers', has been praised for its historical accuracy, with characters from French history, such as D'Artagnan, making appearances. The books have not been without controversy, however. Pérez-Reverte has been criticized by both the far right and the far left for the content of the Alatriste books, with some accusing them of discussing dark aspects of Spanish history, including the Inquisition and the Moriscos.
Pérez-Reverte has also spoken about the character of Alatriste, stating that he feels very Spanish when working with him. He has predicted that Pedro Sánchez, the current Prime Minister of Spain, will remain in the government as long as he can and may even stay in the opposition if he loses the next elections. Pérez-Reverte did not express a clear opinion on Sánchez, but noted that he is no longer surprised by his actions.
There has been no definitive information about who Pérez-Reverte met on Antena 3's program "El Hormiguero" in September 2021 to promote the book "Mission in Paris," nor the exact date of such an event. However, it is known that the novel's author did appear on the show to promote the book.
Pérez-Reverte has been vocal about his opinions on politics, criticizing Alberto Núñez Feijóo, stating that he lacks the necessary charisma to face Pedro Sánchez. He has also criticized Pablo Iglesias, stating that if Spaniards had read more Pérez Galdos, they would never vote for him. The two men are reportedly embroiled in a feud, as mentioned by Pérez-Reverte in an interview.
Despite his political views, Pérez-Reverte has expressed concerns about the influence of social media on society, stating that it leads to less culture and education. He believes that Spaniards are better in times of hardship than in prosperity and has spoken about the human aspect of immigrants and the need for legal immigration. Pérez-Reverte differentiated between legal and illegal immigration, expressing that illegal immigration is inevitable and a phenomenon that can't be stopped.
In a more personal note, Pérez-Reverte revealed that 'Alatriste' was inspired by the Musketeers, a book he read when he was eight or nine years old. He has also spoken about the criticism he has received for focusing on the flag, the imperial Spain, and the tercios in his work, stating that it is a necessary part of understanding the historical context of his novels.
'Mission in Paris' is sure to be a hit with fans of the Alatriste series, offering a thrilling adventure set in the heart of France. Pérez-Reverte's latest work is a testament to his skill as a storyteller and his deep understanding of Spanish history.
