Walker Buehler, a two-time NL All-Star and veteran right-hander, has joined the Philadelphia Phillies following a challenging season with the Boston Red Sox. The Phillies, who are currently in need of a starting pitcher due to ace Zack Wheeler's season-ending thoracic outlet syndrome, are excited to have Buehler on board as they believe he will make them better.

Buehler signed a one-year, $21.05 million deal with the Red Sox last offseason. However, his tenure with the team was short-lived as he was released on Friday, making room for top prospect Payton Tolle. Buehler's time with the Red Sox was marked by some struggles, as he went 7-7 with a 5.45 ERA in 23 games, 22 of which were starts.

Despite these struggles, Dave Dombrowski, the president of the Philadelphia Phillies, believes Buehler still has a good arm. Dombrowski and Phillies officials had a positive Zoom conversation with Buehler and his representatives, during which pitching coach Caleb Cotham had a back-and-forth with Buehler.

Buehler's performance against the Phillies on July 21 was particularly impressive. He allowed one earned run on six hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking one. This strong outing caught the attention of Dombrowski and Philadelphia's brass, who were impressed by his performance.

Buehler was demoted from the Red Sox rotation following his start on August 19 and was later assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he will make a start for them on Saturday. Before his demotion, Buehler made one relief appearance for the Red Sox, allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Yankees on August 24.

Early in the season, Buehler went on the injured list with a shoulder injury and never found his top form with the Red Sox. However, with the Phillies, Buehler will start for the team on September 12 against Kansas City, becoming part of a six-man starting rotation.

Buehler, who is a 31-year-old veteran, has previously helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win World Series titles in 2020 and 2024. He is willing to work with the Phillies and is eager to help the team in their pursuit of a championship. With his addition, the Phillies hope to strengthen their rotation and make a strong push towards the postseason.
