Cleveland Guardians' Clase and Ortiz Extend Leave, Affecting Playoff Push

The Cleveland Guardians, currently four games behind Seattle for the final American League wildcard playoff spot, have been dealt a surprising blow as relief pitcher Emmanuel Clase and starting pitcher Cal Quantrill have extended their leaves, as announced by the team.

Clase, who has a 3.23 earned-run average in 47 1/3 innings over 48 appearances this season and boasts 24 saves in 29 opportunities, was initially scheduled to return on Sunday but will now remain on leave. Similarly, Ortiz, who has a 4.36 ERA in 88 2/3 innings over 16 starts this season, was initially set to return on July 18 but will now be on leave through Sunday.

The ongoing investigation regarding the leaves of Clase and Ortiz has not provided any details, with the Major League Baseball (MLB) and its players union agreeing to extend the leaves until further notice. The league-union statement did not provide any details about the ongoing investigation.

The Guardians have stated that they will continue to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. No further comments will be made by the league, the players union, or the Cleveland Guardians until the investigation has been completed.

Meanwhile, third baseman José Ramírez of the Cleveland Guardians was placed on the injured list on July 3, and his injured list status was extended through Sunday on July 7, 2024.

With 28 games remaining in the regular season, the Guardians are facing a challenging situation as they aim to secure a playoff spot. Their final contest is set for September 28.

Despite the setbacks, the Guardians have shown resilience, with players stepping up to fill the void left by Clase, Ortiz, and Ramírez. The team will continue to push towards their playoff goal, hoping for a strong finish to the season.
