The Hamburg Hochbahn has announced plans to renovate the U3 station Sierichstraße, making it fully accessible for passengers with disabilities. This historic station, one of the oldest in the Hamburg U-Bahn network, has been in operation since 1912.

As part of the renovation, the station will receive a second entrance via an elevator from Dorotheenstraße. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2028, following the completion of the planning approval process. This new entrance will improve the station's connection to Winterhuder Marktplatz, nearby bus lines, shops, and restaurants, as well as the public space.

The renovation plans include the installation of a tactile guidance system for visually impaired passengers, raising, extending, and widening the platform for level boarding, and improved passenger comfort. Historic elements such as the platform canopy and clay tile details will be reconstructed sensitively to preserve the traditional appearance of the station, which is a protected historic monument.

The Sierichstraße station will be the 91st of a total of 92 stations to be upgraded in this way. Another station currently undergoing renovation is the U1 station Meßberg, which is expected to open barrier-free this summer with the installation of a new elevator.

The last station to be made barrier-free will be the U3 station Sternschanze, which will require a new construction. The renovation of the Sierichstraße station is part of a city-wide program to make almost all Hamburg U-Bahn stations barrier-free accessible.

In addition to the functional improvements, the station will also receive ecological considerations. The roofs of the new entrance and the extended platform canopy will be greened. The historic station will also receive a second entrance, and the station will undergo comprehensive modernization.

The first elevator at the U3 station Saarlandstraße is scheduled to be put into operation in December 2025, with full barrier-free accessibility expected by the following summer. This serves as a testament to the Hamburg Hochbahn's commitment to making public transportation accessible to all.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Sierichstraße station renovation and the ongoing efforts to make Hamburg's U-Bahn network more inclusive.
