Plant-based Pulled Pork and Lamb products introduced by Novameat, catering to the growing demand for clean label foods.
In a significant stride towards sustainable and plant-based dining, Novameat, a Barcelona-based startup, has expanded its pulled category with clean-label pork and lamb alternatives. These new products, set to hit the market from September 1, are a testament to Novameat's commitment to innovation and promise a taste, texture, and culinary experience comparable to conventional meats.
John Gray, the Chief Commercial Officer at Novameat, leads the charge in this venture. The startup specialises in plant-based meat alternatives, including pulled pork, lamb, beef, and chicken, focusing on clean-label formulations and expanding sales in international markets.
The new pork and lamb alternatives contain a relatively short and clean list of ingredients. The pulled pork alternative is made from the same base as the lamb alternative, with added natural aromas, carrot and radish concentrates, and malted barley extract. The pulled lamb style product, a significant R&D breakthrough, boasts a distinct flavor and delicate mouthfeel. It contains 19g of protein and 3.5g of fibre per 100g. Both products are free from soy and gluten and require "no complex additives."
The level of processing does not define a food's nutritional credentials, according to experts. Leading health organisations consider vegan meat analogues part of the good-for-you ultra-processed food subset. This alignment with health-conscious dietary trends is crucial, as two in five Europeans are actively avoiding processed foods, and 60% would like to do so in the future. Furthermore, 60% of Spaniards find it important to understand the origin of the ingredients.
Novameat's introduction of these clean-label alternatives comes at a time when Spanish consumers are actively looking to cut back on animal proteins. A study shows that 75% of consumers consider the texture of plant-based meats as important as their conventional counterparts. Novameat's expansion aims to build solid foundations in new European markets, including France, Italy, and Germany, and collaborate to grow sales in both foodservice and retail trade channels.
The startup, which secured $19.2M in Series A funding a year ago, has already made its mark in the culinary world. Novameat's products have appeared at Disfrutar, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant. As Novameat continues to innovate and grow, it promises to bring a more sustainable and health-conscious option to the table.
