David Szalay, a renowned author, has shared his views on the importance of a well-crafted story in literature.
In his early days, Szalay encountered a modernistic, plot-less book classified as science fiction during his high school years. Although he can't remember the author's name, the first name was similar to a former Prime Minister of Canada, Mulroney. Despite its prestigious classification, Szalay found himself struggling to engage with the book, reaching the hundred-page mark and considering giving up.
After sixty pages, Szalay decided the story wasn't starting. This experience has shaped his perspective on literature, leading him to believe that a book lacking a story is not a storybook.
Szalay is a firm believer in the critical role of plot in literature. He values engaging stories that hook readers' interest and hold it until the very end. However, he is willing to accept sparse settings and minimal character development if the characters are interesting.
Interestingly, certain circles appreciate plot-less, avant-garde literature. But Szalay maintains that such books may win prestigious awards, but they will never win the hearts and minds of the majority of readers.
Contrary to some, Szalay does not favour unhappy endings. He believes that a story should provide a satisfying conclusion that resonates with readers.
In a world where some authors push the boundaries of traditional storytelling, Szalay remains committed to his primary purpose as a writer: to tell an interesting story that captivates readers from start to finish.
Recently, a book on the shortlist for a big prize has garnered attention for its unique format - one sentence in the form of a stream of consciousness, spanning over a thousand pages. Despite its intrigue, Szalay has made it clear that he will not be reading the aforementioned book.
Szalay's views on literature serve as a reminder that while some readers and critics may appreciate experimental works, the majority of readers still crave a good story.
