Police allegedly serving as de facto collaborators for trans activists, assertions made by Graham Linehan during his court statement.
Graham Linehan, the Irish writer and co-creator of the popular TV sitcom Father Ted, is currently standing trial for charges of harassing a teenager and criminal damage. The charges are related to an altercation with Sophia Brooks, a 17-year-old transgender activist, last October.
Linehan alleges that he knocked a phone out of Brooks' hand during their encounter, which he describes as a reflex response to a provocative statement. Brooks, on the other hand, claims that Linehan grabbed her phone and threw it to one side during the confrontation.
The incident occurred at the Battle of Ideas conference in London, where Linehan and Brooks had previously clashed. Linehan has been accused of making offensive social media posts about transgender people, for which he was arrested separately.
Linehan denies becoming obsessed with Sophia Brooks and accuses her of being a "young soldier in the trans activist army." He claims that Brooks harassed him by filming him at close quarters and trying to provoke reactions.
Brooks, however, claims that Linehan has no respect for people's privacy or personal space. She told the court that Linehan referred to her as "Tarquin" during a police interview on 5 February. Linehan states that he intended to warn people about potential trouble from Brooks at future events.
Linehan alleges that the Guardian described him as "anti-trans" after he was first spoken to by police. He believes that many institutions have been captured by trans ideology and accuses the police of working for trans activists.
Linehan lived in the US state of Arizona for the past six months, having previously lived in Surrey Quays, south-east London, and Norwich. He claims that Brooks is misogynistic, abusive, and a liar. Brooks, on the other hand, told the court that the "Tarquin" name is apparently due to her poshness.
The trial is ongoing, and the outcome remains to be seen. Regardless, the incident has once again brought attention to the ongoing conflict between Linehan and Brooks, and the broader issues of free speech and trans rights.
