Police from the federal level successfully thwarted additional escalation: Aggressive travelers incited an unexpected landing incident in Cologne/Bonn, managed by the airports of North Rhine-Westphalia (BPOL NRW).
On the evening of August 21, 2025, a passenger flight from Manchester to Larnaca made an unscheduled landing at Cologne/Bonn Airport. The incident was triggered by the violent behaviour of a 41-year-old British national towards fellow passengers and crew members.
Upon landing, the Federal Police apprehended the woman at the aircraft. The Federal Police Inspectorate Cologne/Bonn decided on entry refusal for the traveler, as she was heavily intoxicated, with a breath alcohol reading of 1.76 per mil.
In coordination with the Cologne police, the woman was taken to the station for further processing and placed in police custody for sobering up. The passengers continued their journey to Larnaca with a replacement aircraft.
The original aircraft could not take off again due to technical reasons. The other passengers were taken to the transit area of Cologne/Bonn Airport.
Alcohol consumption in air traffic carries special risks due to lower air pressure and changed oxygen concentrations. The Federal Police urgently appeals for responsible alcohol handling in air traffic, as aggressive behaviour in air traffic can endanger other travelers and severely disrupt the safe course of a flight.
Since the traveler is currently in police custody, she has not officially entered Germany yet. The person who acted violently against fellow passengers and the crew has not been publicly identified. The 41-year-old is to be denied entry immediately after her release from custody and returned to the UK.
