Police Sergeant in Las Vegas Accused of Unlawful Arrests to Exaggerate Crime Rates, Investigation Reveals
In a shocking turn of events, Sergeant Kevin Menon from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has been indicted on 13 charges, following an investigation into his actions on the Las Vegas Strip.
The indictment comes after allegations that Menon was using "probably illegal tactics" while interacting with the public. The investigation, which began in May, was prompted by a complaint from an officer within the Metro police union.
The charges against Menon include nine counts of oppression under color of office, two counts of subornation of perjury, oppression under color of office with immediate threat or use of physical force, and battery of a protected officer.
The indictment follows a series of questionable incidents, including Menon's illegal arrests of people without probable cause. In one video, Menon is seen attempting to hand two men fraudulent money, and his officers detained and searched them while pretending to take Menon into custody as well.
In another incident, Menon bumped into a man on a pedestrian bridge, suggesting he was trying to instigate a violent interaction due to the man being suspected of carrying a knife larger than allowed on the Strip.
The videos, reported by 8 News Now, show multiple arrests made by Menon and his unit on the Las Vegas Strip in April and May this year. One video shows Menon pushing an officer who didn't realize he was a sergeant in plain clothes.
Menon is currently on unpaid administrative leave with suspension of police powers. He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 23. However, no specific information is available regarding a person scheduled to appear in court in October 2023 for allegedly conducting illegal arrests as a sergeant with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
