In a move that is certain to raise alarms among security experts, President Donald Trump has revoked the Secret Service protection for Vice President Kamala Harris. The decision comes after Trump's defeat in last year's presidential election and follows a similar pattern for other high-profile individuals, including members of his own family and former national security adviser John Bolton.
The executive memorandum, issued on Thursday to the Department of Homeland Security, ends Harris' security detail and services. Initially, the Biden administration had extended Harris' protection from six to 18 months, but the administration found no reason for it to go beyond the standard six-month period for former vice presidents.
Harris, who lives in the Los Angeles area, has a primary residence in Michigan and a secondary residence in Georgia, according to recent public forms she completed. Mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass has called Trump's decision to strip Harris of protection "another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation" and warned that it would endanger Harris. Mayor Bass plans to work with California Gov. Gavin Newsom to ensure Harris' safety.
Despite the revoked protection, Harris is about to embark on a book tour for her memoir titled "107 Days." The tour, which begins on September 24, has 15 stops, including visits abroad to London and Toronto. Harris has announced she will not run for California governor in 2026.
Interestingly, former Vice President Mike Pence, Trump's vice president from his first term, did not have extended Secret Service protection beyond the standard six-month period. The book will be released on September 23.
Last year, questions remained about how the Secret Service prepared for a July 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A recent threat intelligence assessment conducted by the Secret Service found no red flags or credible evidence of a threat to Kamala Harris.
Outgoing presidents can extend protection for individuals who might otherwise not be eligible; Trump extended protection for his family after leaving office in 2021. Members of Biden's family, including Trump's adult children, also had their Secret Service protection revoked during Trump's second presidency.
The revocation of Harris' Secret Service protection is a significant development, and it remains to be seen how it will impact her safety and the upcoming book tour.
