Gavin Newsom Mimics Trump's Social Media Style to Counter Influence

California Governor Gavin Newsom is employing an unconventional strategy to counter President Donald Trump's influence, mimicking the President's social media style. This tactic, while not without risk, has gained traction among his supporters and caused controversy among Republicans and conservative-leaning political commentators.

The White House recently shared an image with AFP, repurposing a scene from the show "Mad Men" to demonstrate that Trump is not just unfazed, but doesn't think about Newsom at all. In contrast, Newsom's daily Google searches have seen a significant increase, with a 500% spike since August 1, according to network reports.

Newsom's posts, reminiscent of Trump's, have gained popularity among his supporters who have created their own "Trumpian" memes featuring the Governor. He has imitated Trump's salesman-like rhetoric and sign-off in his posts about redistricting plans. Newsom has also mocked Trump's spelling error in a post about his autobiography, writing "BETA" instead of "BELA."

One of the most controversial moves by Newsom was sharing manipulated images of himself, including superimposing his face on Mount Rushmore and appearing to pray with Tucker Carlson, Kid Rock, and Hulk Hogan. These posts have sparked controversy, with Dana Perino, an anchor on Fox News, criticizing Newsom's new strategy, stating that if she were his wife, she would tell him to stop.

Mike Madrid, a Republican political consultant, redefined "Newsom Derangement Syndrome" as a counterpart to "Trump Derangement Syndrome," a term used to dismiss criticism of President Trump. Politico called the image shared by the White House the first official White House press statement delivered exclusively in meme form.

Jeff Le, a deputy cabinet secretary for previous California governor Jerry Brown, stated that Newsom's messaging has helped introduce him in a tongue-and-cheek manner that reflects the inside joke that many digital native Democrats understand. Newsom's MAGA-coded posts are not only annoying Republicans, but redefining how Democrats can provide an effective opposition to Trump.

However, there is a potential downside to Newsom's strategy. If there is a terrible natural disaster, a catastrophic fire or mudslide, the President may be less inclined to provide timely federal government support and funding for the response. Newsom has criticized the normalization of Trump's communication style and described Trump's late-night social media tirades as pathetic.

As the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee race heats up, it will be interesting to see how Newsom's unconventional strategy evolves and how it impacts his political career.
