The Youth District Council of Regensburg recently held a meeting at Landratsamt Regensburg, bringing together representatives from 15 schools to discuss matters of importance to the district's youth.

The meeting, which took place on July 23, 2024, saw discussions on student transportation, digital initiatives, and youth engagement on social media. Timo Heizmann and Emily Grüll from the Special Pedagogical Support Center Regenstauf proposed the installation of smoke detectors in all school toilets due to smoking taking place there, an initiative that was approved by the Youth District Council.

The majority of young people in the district prefer Instagram and WhatsApp as their preferred social media channels, and the council is considering a fact-based presence on TikTok for better reach to this demographic.

In the discussion on student transportation, Thomas Fischer, department head, presented the legal framework conditions for the cost-free school route. The lack of a break area at Gymnasium Lappersdorf due to ongoing construction measures was addressed, and a possible expansion of the leisure areas is currently being examined.

The district is a leader in digitalization, with over two million digitally stored files, and the district administrator, Tanja Schweiger, emphasized the importance of promoting political participation among young people.

The Youth District Council was established in 2016 with the aim of introducing young people to district-related topics and giving them a voice in district politics. The council traditionally holds two meetings each year - one in the summer and one just before the Christmas holidays.

The next meeting of the Youth District Council is expected to take place the week before Christmas, where topics that occupied the district in the first half of the year will be discussed. Deputy District Administrator Maria Scharfenberg and District Councilor Irmgard Sauerer participated in the meeting.

Timo Heizmann, who represented the Sonderpädagogisches Förderzentrum Regenstauf at the last youth district council meeting in July 2025, was also present at the meeting.

The Youth District Council continues to work towards creating a more inclusive and informed environment for young people in the Regensburg district.
