Bishop Jose Arturo Cepeda, a native of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is set to return to his home diocese after 14 years of service in the Archdiocese of Detroit. His episcopal ministry was shaped during his time in the Motor City, but his heart remains deeply connected to San Antonio.

Pope Leo XIV appointed Bishop Cepeda as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, a role he will formally assume during two Masses on Oct. 12 at San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio. The welcoming Masses will be held in Spanish and English, reflecting the diverse community that Bishop Cepeda is eager to serve.

Bishop Cepeda was born on May 15, 1969, and immigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was 19. He studied at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Anglicum) and received a licentiate and doctorate of sacred theology. In 1996, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Antonio at his home parish of St. Mary Magdalen by Archbishop Patricio Flores.

Pope Benedict XVI named Father Cepeda as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit in April 2011, making him the youngest bishop in the United States at age 41. Bishop Cepeda served in Detroit for 14 years before his return to San Antonio.

Bishop Cepeda expressed feelings of excitement and sadness about his departure from the Archdiocese of Detroit. He is deeply grateful for the trust placed in him and the opportunity to serve in the Archdiocese for 14 years. The Archdiocese of San Antonio encompasses 19 counties in south-central Texas and has a total population of nearly 2.8 million, of which over 1.16 million are Catholic.

The appointment was announced by Msgr. Većeslav Tumir, chargé d' affaires at the apostolic nunciature, in Washington. Further information about Bishop Cepeda's life and career before his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio was not readily available.

As Bishop Cepeda prepares to take on his new role, he will be formally welcomed by the community that he previously served as parochial vicar at San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio. The Masses will mark a homecoming for Bishop Cepeda, who is eager to continue his service to the Catholic community in his hometown.
