Postponed town hall schedule due to construction difficulties, causing delays
The anticipated delivery date for Hamburg's New City Hall, located in the Atlantic-Haus in Hamburg-St. Pauli, has been pushed back from December 1, 2025, to mid-September 2026. This delay is due to a series of unforeseen challenges during the renovation works and complex coordination between project partners.
Mayor Frank Stein remains committed to transforming the city's administrative hub into a modern, digital, and citizen-friendly space. The New City Hall is expected to bring a positive impact, enhancing the city's perspective and development.
The change of ownership during the project phase, with the Israeli investment company Gold Tree Group taking over the building in August 2025, has also contributed to the time shifts.
Despite the setbacks, preparations for future occupancy are progressing as planned. This includes digitization, e-file introduction, and the organizational and technical equipment of the new work environment. Preparations for new wall positions in the building have already begun on the construction site.
The Mayor expresses anticipation for the positive impact the project will have on the city. To keep the public informed, a comprehensive status report will be presented to political bodies in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Structural and technical issues that emerged after the demolition of the existing building necessitated further planning and additional construction measures. Coordination and handoffs between project partners were more complex than initially expected, leading to further delays.
Despite these challenges, Mayor Stein remains optimistic about the project's future. He looks forward to the day when the New City Hall will welcome the city's administration and serve as a symbol of Hamburg's continued progress and development.
