The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal flood warning for the entire Jersey Shore and the southern shores of Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, due to the approaching Hurricane Erin. The warning is in effect through 2 a.m. Saturday for the Jersey Shore and from 5 p.m. Thursday until 1 a.m. Friday for the New York metro area.

John Murray, a meteorologist for the NWS' New York office, has warned that the coastal flooding risk is particularly high for Thursday night. The biggest effects are expected then, with some areas potentially seeing more than 2 feet of flooding. The coastal flooding risk is especially pronounced in vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline, and given the high surf, it is very dangerous to be out in the water.

Meteorologists predict waves between 4 and 13 feet tall, potentially up to 16 or 17 feet tall, this week. These conditions have led to the issuance of high-surf advisories at regional beaches. Officials are urging people to stay out of the water amid life-threatening rip currents.

Hurricane Erin is currently affecting the New York metro area, but it is tracking far offshore. Nevertheless, the NWS' New York office has made a statement regarding the coastal flooding risk, emphasising the possibility for widespread moderate coastal flooding, especially in vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed and follow any instructions from local officials. It is crucial to prioritise safety during this time, and to avoid any unnecessary risks near the water. Keep a close eye on weather updates and remain vigilant as Hurricane Erin continues to approach the coast.
