Brooklyn Nets Acquire Forward Haywood Highsmith, Highsmith Set for Return After Surgery

The Brooklyn Nets have made a move in the offseason, acquiring forward Haywood Highsmith from the Miami Heat in a trade deal. Highsmith, who underwent successful surgery to repair a meniscal tear in his right knee, is expected to miss at least the start of training camp but is on track for a return to the Nets' basketball court approximately eight to ten weeks after his surgery in early August.

Highsmith sustained the injury during an offseason training session in Baltimore. He has commenced his rehabilitation program and is making progress, according to team sources. The timeline for his return from surgery is 8-10 weeks.

In the 2020-21 season, Highsmith played in 100 G League games and spent the season in the German Basketball Bundesliga before joining the Heat. Last season, he set career highs in games played (74), starts (42), and minutes per game (24.6). Highsmith earned $5.2 million last season and is set to earn approximately $5.61 million in the 2025-26 season.

According to Basketball Reference, Highsmith has appeared in 213 regular-season games (80 starts) and played in 35 playoff games (zero starts) over his four seasons with the Heat. He saw more playing time in Miami under head coach Erik Spoelstra.

The Nets were able to absorb Highsmith's salary into their open cap space, allowing the trade to be made without sending salary back to the Heat. With the addition of Highsmith, the Nets are $22 million below the salary cap, including the $12.1 million Cam Thomas free agent hold.

Thomas is showing an increasing interest in playing out next season on a $6 million qualifier to enjoy true free agency next summer. He is considering a short-term contract with the Nets for next season before seeking a larger deal as an unrestricted free agent in 2026. Highwood Highsmith is expected to become trade-eligible again after December 15.

The Nets have until Oct. 21 to reach 90% of the salary cap. The team has not announced any further moves as the offseason continues. Stay tuned for more updates on the Brooklyn Nets and their roster moves.
