Bird flu outbreak reported at premises in Steinburg district - Poultry illnesses surge in Steinburg county
In a recent development, the avian flu has been detected in Helgoland, a part of Kreis Pinneberg, Schleswig-Holstein. This outbreak has led to the establishment of containment and surveillance zones to prevent the spread of the pathogen to neighboring flocks.
The district administrator announced the implementation of these zones following the detection of the disease outbreak at an operation in Kreis Steinburg. A containment zone has been established around the affected farm, known as Geflügelhof Schreiner, and a surveillance zone of at least ten kilometers has been set up as a precautionary measure.
To ensure the safety of all poultry in Schleswig-Holstein, the Ministry of Agriculture in Kiel has issued an order for all poultry farmers to review and improve safety measures on their operations. Strict rules apply to farmers within the containment zone, with poultry required to remain in the barn and no transportation, slaughtering, or selling of poultry permitted within the zone.
In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture advises that backyard poultry should have no contact with wild birds, as wild birds pose a potential risk to domestic poultry. Strict safety measures should be enforced on all poultry farms in Schleswig-Holstein to minimise the risk of the avian flu spreading.
The containment zone covers a protection zone with a radius of three kilometers.
