Preferred route enabled for racehorse Kalpana, favorite of Arc, as Juddmonte group crafts strategy for Longchamp race competition
The upcoming Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, scheduled for October 5 at Longchamp, promises an exciting race with several top contenders vying for the prestigious title. Among them are two horses from the Juddmonte stable, Kalpana and Whirl, who have been making waves in the racing world.
Kalpana, a four-year-old filly, has been in impressive form this year. She won the September Stakes last year and the Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot in 2020. Her latest victory came in the Prix Alec Head, and her next target is the two-kilometer Group 1 races at Leopardstown and Ascot. Andrew Balding, her trainer, has announced plans to have Kalpana compete at Longchamp for the Arc.
Kalpana's connections believe a victory in the September Stakes at Kempton, where she is likely to compete, is crucial for her Arc preparations. She finished third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and second in the Pretty Polly and King George this year, suggesting she is well-prepared for the challenge ahead. Kalpana can be backed at between 5-1 and 7-1 for the Arc.
Another horse from the Juddmonte stable, Minnie Hauk, is also a contender for the Arc. She won the Yorkshire Oaks and is a best-priced 10-1 for the Arc. Faster ground at the Breeders' Cup might suit Minnie Hauk, making her an interesting prospect for the Arc.
The ground conditions at Longchamp will also play a significant role in the Arc picture for team Ballydoyle. Soft conditions at Longchamp would be in Whirl's favor. Whirl, another horse from the Juddmonte stable, is an 8-1 chance for the Arc.
Interestingly, the Juddmonte team sent Enable to the Kempton race for her reappearance in 2018, and she went on to win the Arc. This could be a strategic move for Kalpana and Whirl, as they prepare for the big race.
Meanwhile, Ballydoyle's star fillies are set to be divided between the Arc and America. This leaves the Arc open for other contenders, making it an unpredictable race.
