Premier League shake-up as Manchester City stumble, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal triumph over Leeds United
In the opening week of the 2023-24 Premier League season, several teams showcased their prowess while others faced early challenges. Here's a roundup of the key events.
Marcus Tavernier's solitary goal was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Bournemouth over 10-man Wolves, marking a promising start for the Cherries. Meanwhile, Sunderland suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat in their return to the Premier League, with Burnley securing their first points back in the top flight.
Arsenal began their campaign with a resounding 5-0 victory over Leeds, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring his first goals for the team. Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber doubled his goal tally, scoring twice from corners, while Gyokeres added another from a pass by Riccardo Calafiori and another from a penalty kick deep into stoppage time.
Tottenham, now under the management of Thomas Frank, secured a 2-0 win over Sunderland, with goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha. Frank emphasised the importance of defensive principles and mentality in Tottenham's victory.
Manchester City, on the other hand, suffered a 2-0 loss to Tottenham at the Etihad. Pep Guardiola is facing a goalkeeping dilemma, with James Trafford having a poor performance and rumours suggesting Ederson could join Galatasaray. City are also reportedly close to signing Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has agreed to join the club, pending the completion of negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain.
Elsewhere, Dango Ouattara, Brentford's club record signing, scored the only goal on 12 minutes against Aston Villa, but Villa failed to find the back of the net in their opening two games, losing 1-0.
Champions Liverpool will travel to Newcastle on Monday, with a stand-off over Magpies striker Alexander Isak, who is attempting to force through a move to the club before the end of the transfer window.
In other injury news, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka were injured during Arsenal's match against Leeds. The extent of their injuries remains unclear.
The Premier League season is off to an exciting start, with plenty of drama both on and off the pitch. Stay tuned for more updates as the season unfolds.
