Preparatory Measures Taken by the U.S. Travel Association in Airports and Visa Systems for the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics

The U.S. Travel Association, a prominent organisation in the travel industry, has taken a significant step towards preparing for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics. The America's Sports and Travel Mega Event Coalition (ASTMEC), a collaborative effort led by industry leaders from the sports, travel, and business sectors, has been launched to address the challenges these events present.

In an interview on the Aviation Pros Podcast, Erik Hansen, Senior Vice President of Government Relations at the U.S. Travel Association, discussed the urgent need for visa modernization and airport upgrades as part of the U.S.'s preparations for the influx of international visitors during these mega sporting events.

The combined economic impact of these events is projected to exceed $100 billion, making it crucial that the necessary infrastructure, security, and policy adjustments are in place. According to Hansen, ASTMEC will focus on addressing these needs, working closely with the federal government on various aspects related to these events.

The main host cities for the USA mega sporting events are spread across multiple locations in the USA and neighbouring countries. For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, key cities in the USA include New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas/Arlington, Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, Boston, Houston, and Kansas City. Canadian cities Vancouver and Toronto, as well as Mexican cities Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara, are also hosts. The 2028 Summer Olympics will have its main hub in Los Angeles, California.

Hansen emphasised the importance of ASTMEC's work in preparing for the influx of international visitors during these events. He also underscored the potential lasting legacy these investments could create for America's travel system beyond 2028. The investments made by ASTMEC could have lasting benefits for America's travel system, according to the interview, suggesting that the preparations for these mega sporting events could lead to a more efficient and modern travel system in the long run.

The U.S. is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, and the role of ASTMEC in shaping U.S. preparations for the 30 million international visitors these events are anticipated to bring cannot be overstated. The initiatives undertaken by ASTMEC, such as visa modernization and airport upgrades, are crucial to ensuring the success of these events and the long-term benefits they could bring to America's travel system.
