Prepare for the 311th installment of the Doggett's Coat and Badge Wager, the world's oldest boat race
This Wednesday, the 311th Doggett's Coat and Badge Wager, the oldest boat race in the world, will take place on the River Thames. The race, which covers a distance of 4 miles and 5 furlongs (7.44 km) between London Bridge and Cadogan Pier in Chelsea, is a testament to the rich history and tradition of London's waterways.
The race sees participants from various backgrounds, each with their own unique stories. One such competitor is 27-year-old Charlie Milward, rowing on Station One in White. Milward, a High-Speed Master for Uber Boats by Thames Clippers, made a promise to his master, who was his cousin, that he would row the race if he ever finished his freedom.
Another participant is Coran Cherry, rowing on Station Two in Black. Cherry has personal ties with the race that go back to 2021. His son was born premature while he was at Blackfriars Bridge during his first attempt at the race. Interestingly, Cherry's son is named Blue, as Coran competed in that colour as well. This year marks Cherry's fourth and final Doggett's Coat and Badge Wager.
The race is organized collaboratively by The Fishmongers' Company and the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames. Bobby Prentice, the Bargemaster to the Fishmongers' and a former Doggett's winner, will oversee the race. Prentice advises competitors to concentrate on the course and not go wide, and to be aware of obstacles on the course.
The winner of the race will be awarded one of the City of London's most prestigious accolades: the Red Coat and Silver Badge. Winners of the Doggett's Wager often go on to long careers on the water and in some cases race for Great Britain, or perform ceremonial duties for the Royal Family.
The Doggett's Coat and Badge Wager, established in 1715, is the oldest continuous race in any sport. It combines tough competition, heritage, and pageantry, and is one of the UK's most unique events.
As the competitors prepare for the race, the anticipation builds. The 311th Doggett's Coat and Badge Wager promises to be an exciting event, showcasing the spirit of camaraderie, tradition, and competition that has made this race a cherished part of London's history. The race is set to start at 12.15 on 10 September 2025.
