Illinois Football Kicks Off 2025 Season with Impressive Win Over Duke

The Illinois Fighting Illini started the 2025 season on a high note, defeating Duke University with a convincing score of 52-3. This victory marked the team's 10th win in a row, matching the school record set in the previous season.

In the 2024 campaign, Illinois ended the season on a four-game win streak, including a victory over South Carolina in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. The team's success was not a surprise, given the experienced coaching staff led by Bret Bielema, who is in his fifth year as head coach and has a contract through 2030. For wrestling, Michael Poeta serves as the head coach in his fifth season.

One of the standout players for Illinois was Xavier Scott, the cornerback who earned a spot on the All-Big Ten first team in 2024. Scott's exceptional performance was evident throughout the season, and he continued to shine in the opening game of 2025.

Duke's offense, led by quarterback Darian Mensah, put up a fight in the first half, but the tide turned in the second half. The turning point came when Duke wide receiver Cooper Barkate caught a 17-yard pass on a crucial third-and-12, setting up a scoring drive. Duke coach Manny Diaz described this play as the "play of the game."

Despite the late surge, Illinois proved too strong for Duke, winning comfortably. The Vegas betting line for the game had initially favoured Duke by 10.5 points, but it shifted in favour of Illinois to 4.5 points, with an over/under of 49.5. The moneyline for Illinois was -188, and for Duke was +155.

Both teams will be eager to bounce back when they meet again next Saturday in an ACC vs Big Ten matchup. Illinois will be looking to build on their strong start, while Duke will be aiming to regroup and challenge the Illini.

Meanwhile, Gabe Jacas, Illinois' outside linebacker, was named a preseason All-America by ESPN. Jacas had an impressive 2024 season, recording eight sacks, 13.0 tackles for a loss, 10 quarterback hurries, and three forced fumbles.

Duke's offense showed promise in their game against Elon, with 10 pass catchers used. Que'Sean Brown caught a team-high six balls for 93 yards, while Sahmir Hagans had five catches, two for touchdowns. Cooper Barkate, who had five catches in his first game at Duke, including the biggest catch of the night with 117 yards, will be a key player to watch in the rematch.

As the season unfolds, both teams will look to continue their success and challenge each other in the upcoming ACC vs Big Ten matchup.
